Shallow largemouth on shoreline cover and beds
Like much of the field, Matt Allen quickly discovered that there are no longer any fish living in the main lake of John's Pond. It's official. They're all gone. So, Matt took a shot at the back pond and it paid off with a victory. But, it wasn't quite as simple as it sounds.
After running and gunning around the main lake with no success, Allen made a move to the back pond. Despite catching multiple shorts, Allen continued to grind it out in the shallow backwater and eventually his patience paid off. As the water warmed in the afternoon, the bigger female Largies that had been non-existent suddenly appeared, cruising around shoreline cover and setting up on beds all over both sides of the back pond. Allen mixed it up, skipping shallow cover and sight-fishing the bedding fish to cull his way up to 15.67 lb which was more than enough for the win. Congratulations to Matt Allen for another great victory!
Mike Elson followed a similar pattern to Matt Allen, circling the back pond for hours. After catching 20 or so shorts, Mother Nature flipped a switch at exactly 1:00 pm and Elson caught five solid keepers off of consecutive docks...the exact same docks that had only produced 11 inch fish for the previous six hours! Landing 11.29 lb in 30 minutes was enough to secure a second place finish for Elson. Timing is everything during the pre-spawn, and Elson got lucky that the first wave of females made their move when they did and he was there to capitalize.
Not to be overlooked, Joe Goyette and Ed Robak both landed stud Smallmouth at 4.10 lb and 3.80 lb respectively. Goyette's Smallie sets the bar for lunker smallie this season and only time will how long it will hold out. Congrats to Joe and Ed for solid lunkers on a day when big fish were especially hard to come by. And, congratulations to all the SSBM club members who did battle on John's Pond to open the 2021 season!
