Mike Drake prides himself on beign a "Smallie Guy" and he definitely proved it (again) at this year's 1-Day Champlain derby. Battling high winds and rolling waves, Drake spent most of his day offshore on a rock seam that was holding big Smallmouth. Patiently drop-shotting his way back and forth along the shoal, Drake landed a fish every 45 minutes or so and eventually culled up to his winning weight of 18.22 lb. With all of his fish coming from about 30', Mike was careful to fizz each of them and he was rewarded with five alive at weigh in, which was critical to avoid any weight deductions and to take care of the great smallmouth resource that the big lake offers. Clearly, Drake did everything right in finding and landing the big ones and taking care of his catch. Congratulations to Mike Drake for another great victory!
Jim D'Ambra, another top-notch "Smallie Guy" carolina-rigged his spots to the tune of 15.45 lb or Champlain brownies. It was not quite enough to catch Drake, but a solid performance during difficult weather conditions. Congratulations again to Mike, Jim, and to all the club members who battled it out on Lake Champlain 2023!
