Mike Drake proved once again that he's the man to beat in the SSBM club as he landed 13.96 lb of Watuppa largemouth (on only 4 fish) to lock up his first win of the 2024 season. Despite fumbling around off shore for most of the day, and not having any fish at 2:00 pm, Drake made the right adjustments late in the day. He moved shallow, throwing a jig and chatterbait, and that turned out to be the ticket as he landed his four fish in the last hour of the day, including the tourney lunker at 5.37 lb.
Putting aside his Carolina Rig, Jim D'Ambra worked the shallows with a chatterbait and was rewarded with five fish for 11.20 lb, including a chunky 4.56 lb largemouth. Despite having a full five-fish limit, D'Ambra fell just shy of Drake's total weight and had to settle for second place.
Landing in third place was club newcomer Thomas St. Michel with a limit weighing 10.69 lb. Despite never having caught a limit at Watuppa, St. Michel stayed confident and worked one mid-depth area all morning with dark colored spinnerbaits and hair jigs. That strategy paid off with a decent bag of fish, allowing him to move offshore with a jerkbait in search of a pre-spawn lunker. The jerkbait produced a solid 2.41 lb kicker which rounded out a decent bag and locked Thom into third place overall.
Another new club member, Kyle Zaro, also had a decent day, landing three fish for 7.51 lb. Fishing as a non-boater, Zaro did his damage from the back of Drake's boat. With a stingy bite and tough conditions, Zaro's three fish were enough to land him in fourth place at the end of the day.
Congratulations to all of the top finishers and to all the club members who battled it out at the season opener on South Watuppa!
