Vibrating jigs in shallow grass

After motor problems cut short his last tournament at Ticonderoga, Dan Marini vowed to take revenge on the Big Lake the next time he had the chance. Well, 2022 gave him that chance and he made good on his promise, but it wasn’t easy. With low water and lots of shallow grass available in the 1’-4’ range, Marini decided to cover water by ripping a bladed jig through the grass in search of reaction strikes. Despite having only one fish at 1:30 on Day 1, he made a quick milk run between his two best spots and managed to fill out a limit by 2:45 that was good for 14.82 lb and the tourney lead.

Day 2 was no easier for Marini as he got his first fish early but then went almost four hours without a bite. Calling an audible and trying some new water, he landed three quick fish around one dock and then his fifth fish on nearby shoreline grass. And that fifth fish was critical, as a massive Pike broke off his vibrating jig shortly after and not having an identical replacement he wasn’t able to land another bass on any other style jig. Luckily, his 12.25 lb limit was just enough to land him in the winner’s circle by less than half a pound. Congratulations to Dan Marini for grinding out a great victory!

Fighting the good fight, Kevin White clawed his way to a very close second place finish with 26.67 lb. Kevin flipped and pitched shallow grass and deeper isolated grass clumps for his fish, and made a strong run at the top spot, falling just short of Marini’s final weight. Congratulations to Kevin for a solid performance and to all the SSBM Club Members who did battle at the 2022 2-Day!
