It was a mix of the old and the new for the 2023 Season Opener at Billington Sea. The “old” was the same story from last season, of Mike Drake dominating most tournaments while the “new” was having three of the top six finishers being new club members for 2023.

Having spent last season in training with his electronics, Mike Drake has now become a true Jedi Master and he cut down the competition using both Livescope and HB360. After locating multiple areas of offshore wood and rock, Drake patiently worked his spots with a jig and was able to pull multiple fish off each piece of structure and cover. By rotating through a few key areas, he was able to cull up to his final limit of 10.83 lb which was more than enough to win on a typically stingy Billington Sea. Congratulations to Mike Drake for another great victory and a first step toward back-to-back AOY titles!

Doing his best to dethrone Drake, Mike Elson sacked 9.45 lb of Billington Largies to land in second place. Casting a swim jig around rocky humps and flipping a texas-rigged creature bait into thick matted weed landed Elson two decent fish and a few 12” keepers, but he finished the day one kicker away from overtaking Drake.

Spots three through six were filled out by Mike Andrews, Kevin White, Rafael Rodriguez, and Joel Anderson. White had a typical strong performance, but it was Andrews, Rodriguez, and Anderson who surprised the club veterans by rocketing to the top of the leaderboard in their very first SSBM Club Tournament. Clearly, the "new guys" were making a statement that they may be new to the club, but they're definitely not rookies! Congratulations to all the top finishers and to all the club members who turned out for the 2023 Billington Brawl.
