Winning Pattern
Carolina Rig on weed flats and humps

It was definitely a tougher bite than expected, but Jim D'Ambra managed to figure out the fish better than anyone else and land himself and his co-angler, Dave Doyle, in first and second place.  On Day 1 D'Ambra located numbers of Largemouth on a sloping weedy flat and spent most of the day patiently coaxing them into the boat with his signature Carolina Rig.  Doyle spent a while throwing other baits, but finally broke down and settled on a Carolina Rig as well, and was then able to load up his side of the livewell.  For both anglers, their persistence was rewarded, as D'Ambra turned in the biggest bag of the tournament at 17.09 lb with Doyle close behind at 14.66 lb.  Bruce Allen also had a good first day, capitalizing on a leach bite along rip rap, as he brought 15.41 lb to the scales to land in second place on Day 1.

On Day 2 D'Ambra's largemouth pattern fell apart and he was forced to scramble.  But, he made some good decisions and found a mixed bag of Smallies and Largies further to the north and was able to bring in 13.09 lb.  His two-day total of 30.18 was good for the win under tougher than usual conditions.  Dave Doyle held his own as well, bringing in 10.91 lb on Day 2 to take over second place as Bruce Allen stumbled after his great Day 1 bag.  Not far behind was Brian Wheeler whose two-day total of 25.32 lb was just a hair behind Doyle and good for third place.  Mike Drake turned in the biggest bag on Day 2 at 13.65 lb and jumped up to fourth place overall.  Rounding out the top five was Bill Barrett with 24.95 lb, finishing only a drop of water behind Drake.  On a side note, Brian Ware had an unofficial weight of 14.88 lb on Day 2 which would have put him in contention for second place overall, but he was unable to make the weigh in due to mechanical trouble with his boaters motor.  So goes life on Champlain!  Congratulations to Jim D'Ambra and Dave Doyle for a great one-two finish and to all the SSBM club members who braved the Big Lake in their search for Bass Fishing Glory!
