Pre-spawn Smallmouth on breaks mixed with spawners on beds

Bill Barrett turned in another amazing performance in the second tournament of the season to lock up another well-deserved victory. On a windy day that made sight fishing tough, Barrett started out by fan casting a 5" Viper Swim Bait by Daddy Mac Lures around deeper spawning flats near the first break line. He was able to limit out with his swim bait and then go lunker hunting for bedding fish. Despite the windy conditions, Bill was able to cull up three times with smallies on beds to arrive at his final weight of 14.09 lb which was more than enough for the win. Congratulations to Bill Barrett for his second straight victory!

Mike Elson drop-shotted deeper beds to land five decent smallmouth totaling 13.21 lb which was good for second place. Elson found better quality fish on deeper beds (6'-8') and noted that his 5-year-old waypoints were still accurate enough to put him onto bedding areas that were very hard to see under the breezy conditions. Making 10-15 long casts to each bed was key to Elson's success as the smallmouth were not locked on, not very agressive, and very easily spooked.

"Big Fish" Bruce Allen landed a 4.04 lb bronze back to take lunker for the day, and we'll have to see if it can hold up for the season (which includes tourneys at Champlain and Winnisquam).

Next up is Wequaquet Lake on Friday 6/14. Will there still be fish on beds or will it be a post-spawn spectacular. Check in next month to find out!
