The 2020 Season has had plenty of ups and downs with cancelled tournaments, social distancing, and tough fishing at many of the events. So why would we expect the final contest of the year be any different? After high winds caused the cancellation of the Harwich tournament the week prior, the last test of the season was relocated to Agawam Mill Pond in hopes that a new location would bring some good karma to the last event of the season. And with warm, calm conditions, it seemed like things were headed in the right direction. Early in the day, both D'Ambra and Elson caught fish at a reasonable pace. D'Ambra coaxed a few small fish out of deeper water by using a drop shot, while Elson power fished the bank for a couple of decent bites including the tourney lunker at 4.23 lbs. But when the morning bite shut down, only D'Ambra was able to continue catching them as he landed a solid 3.66 lb kicker from under a dock. That fish put him just over 7 lbs for the day which would be more than enough to lock up the victory.
Despite the tough fishing it appeared that the season would end on a positive note as anglers headed to the weigh in. But, just as the boats were being pulled, the curse of 2020 proved that it wasn't quite done yet. D'Ambra lost his truck keys overboard while approaching the ramp and shortly after, Dave Doyle went for an unexpected swim while trying to get off D'Ambra's boat. Luckily, spare keys and spare clothes saved the day, and D'Ambra took home the trophy, which made it all worth it. Congratulations to all of the SSBM anglers who made it through the strangest season in club history, and let's hope that things get better for next year!
