Junk fishing the shallows

For the second straight year Bob Wheeler dominated at Mashpee Wakeby.  A win is a win, but this year's victory was extra sweet for Wheeler as it bumped him into second place overall and guaranteed him a boater spot at the Mass Bass State Championships next August.  Junk fishing and milk running spots all over the lake was Wheeler's strategy and it proved effective.  If he didn't get bit, he moved.  If a bait didn't work, he tried something different.  His fast-paced approach worked to the tune of five fish for 11.00 lb including the tourney lunker, a 3.92 lb smallmouth.  Congratulations to Bob Wheeler for another great win and for a strong late season surge that put him into second place overall!

Finishing in second place was Joe Trottier in only his second tournament as a boater.  Trottier dedicated himself to top water baits all day and it paid off.  He caught his lunker 3.46 lb smallmouth fiirst thing in the morning on a plopper style top water and then added two more keepers later in the day on a popper.  His pattern rewarded him with more than 5 keeper bites, but top waters are a double edged sword and he wasn't able to get all of those bites into the boat.  Still, his three fish bag for 6.95 lb was enough to give Joe his best finish of the season.  Congratulations to Joe Trotter for a great performance and to all the SSBM club members who battled it out on Mashpee Wakeby.
