Jigs on hard cover, deep and shallow
Shortly after joining the club in 2018, Mike Drake established himself as a deep water Smallie specialist. Having fished Lake Erie for years, he was used to big lakes and deep water. But, with most of the club schedule taking place on fairly shallow natural lakes, Drake worked hard to expand his expertise to include shallow Largie techniques and clearly his hard work paid off. After prefishing Mopo hard and finding key off-shore wood and grass, come tourney day Mike was able land some solid fish off-shore in the morning. Then, as the sun got higher and the day warmed he moved shallow to finish off his limit. Doing all of his damage on a jig, Mike landed a solid 12.98 lb including the tourney lunker, a 5.09 lb hawg Mopo largie. With only three other limits coming to the scales, Mike’s bag was more than enough for the win. Congratulations to “The Drake” for a great performance on a tough day of fishing and for his first club victory.
Turning in the day’s second heaviest bag was Matt Allen with 11.56 lb. Catching most of his fish off-shore on soft plastics, Allen was one big bite short of overtaking Mike Drake. But, under tough conditions Allen turned in a very respectable weight and locked up a solid second place finish. Congratulations to Mike Drake, Matt Allen, and to all the club members that came out to do battle for the season opener on West Monponsett.
