Shallow bedding areas and deeper points

Anyone who fishes Wequaquet Lake regularly knows that if you hit it at the right time in May, you can land the bag of a lifetime. Well, for the Southshore Bassmasters, it looks like the second tourney of the season was a week too late and a little too cold and cloudy for anything even close to a slugfest. Club anglers struggled to find any big bites, on beds or offshore, despite combing through dozens of small males. But, regardless of the tough conditions, Kevin White was able to put together a game plan that landed him his first SSBM club victory. Starting his day shallow, White focused on docks and Bluegill bedding areas. Then, looking for a bigger post-spawn bite, he moved offshore to deeper drops and main lake points. His strategy worked, as he landed 11.61 lb with a 3.26 lb kicker which was just enough to take home the first-place trophy. Congratulations to Kevin White for a great performance and for his first SSBM club win.

With none of the big girls left on beds things setup perfectly for Jim D'Ambra, the deep water specialist in the Southshore Bassmasters club. Jimmy has a history of winning post-spawn tourneys by carolina rigging along drops and points, so the conditions seemed to fit his skill set perfectly. But, as D'Ambra spent the day searching a variety of depths offshore he was surprised to realize that the big girls weren't there either or they just weren't biting. After landing 2 lb bass all day long, Jimmy finally caught a few slightly bigger fish that bumped his limit up to 11.43, just shy of Kevin White, but good for second place.

Bringing in the lunker for the day, a 3.50 lb largemouth, Joe Goyette had a strong third place finish. Congratulations to the top three and to all the SSBM club members who did battle on a tricky day at Wequaquet Lake!
