Bill Barrett was not particularly happy with his performance in the season opener at Billington Sea, so he was determined to make up for it at Wequaquet. The competitor that he is, Barrett put his head down and pre-fished multiple days to get a feel for what would work at the second stop of the SSBM 2023 Tour. Realizing that the majority of bass were not locked on beds, Barrett focused his attack on offshore grass with a black jig and was able to land a solid sack of largies. He then located his kicker, a 3.42 lb greenback, on a bed and was able to trick it into the boat for a final total weight of 15.32 lb which was more than enough to take home the first-place trophy. Congratulations to Bill Barrett for a well-deserved victory!
Mike Elson was caught off guard by the lack of spawners on beds, but after catching a solid 3lb largie off a dock early in the morning, he shifted his approach from bed fishing to power fishing docks and bushes with a swim jig and a senko. The swim jig landed the bigger fish in his bag, and the senko helped to fill out a limit of keepers for a total weight of 12.00 lbs which was good for second place.
Joe Goyette rounded out the top three by jigging mid-depths at the mouths of coves for pre and post-spawners. Goyette fished rocky sloping drop offs with a jig to intercept bass moving into and out of spawning areas. His strategy paid off to the tune of 11.06 lb, landing him in third place overall.
Lunker for the day went to Kevin White for a 6.06 lb hawg largemouth caught in offshore grass. Time will tell if his largie will hold out and earn Kevin the coveted season lunker award.
Congratulations to all of the top finishers and to all of the SSBM members who did battle on Wequaquet Lake for 2023!
