Drop Shotting schooling Smallies chasing bait on main lake points
With water temps pushing 70, the Smallmouth that roam Lake Winnisquam had not yet made a move up shallow to start their Fall feed. Instead, they were camped out in their summer haunts in 30-50 ft of water making them a difficult target for most anglers. Catching Smallies that deep takes more than just mastery of your electronics, it takes the confidence to believe that you will find them and catch them if you just keep looking. And that is exactly what Kyle Mollica did, using his Garmin Panoptix LiveScope unit to locate schools of Smallmouth on main lake points chasing Smelt. While the rest of the club was grinding away for five bites, Mollica caught 30+ fish, culling up to his final weight of 12.66 lbs. Using a Drop Shot, he caught Smallies both near the bottom and suspended as they were following schools of baitfish. Having the confidence to rely on his electronics allowed Mollica to locate fish that few other anglers could target and it paid off with an impressive victory. Congratulations to Kyle Mollica for a great win under difficult conditions!
Not to be outdone, Bruce Allen came within ounces of victory by drop-shotting Smallies from 32-35 ft depths for 12.02 lb. Drawing on his salt water background, Allen is no stranger to chasing fish in deep, open water and he used his expertise to find similar groups of Smallmouth as Mollica. One more quality bite and Allen would have been standing in the winner’s circle.
Mike Drake, also a deep water Smallmouth specialist, drop-shotted 11.16lb from spots all over the lake to take third place. His bag included the tourney lunker, a stout 4.30 lb Smallie, that also takes over lunker Smallie for the season. With only one tournament left we’ll see if his fish will hold up and earn him the $200 lunker prize for the year.
