Shallow cover for Largemouth, offshore humps for Smallies
Anyone who has ever fished with or against Matt Allen comes away amazed by his talent as an angler, his incredible casting ability, and his nose for finding fish. But more than anything, it's Allen's quite confidence and humble nature that is most impressive. All of these attributes were on display at Lake Champlain as Matt, once again, dominated the field with a record-setting performance but accepted the tourney trophy with his typical quiet dignity and humble appreciation. If attitude defines a champion, then there is no greater champion than Matt Allen.
Allen fished his typical shallow cover and docks most of day one and was rewarded by a limit scratching the 18 lb mark. Knowing that he would need a big bag on day two in order to break the club two-day weight record, Matt mixed in some Smallies early to establish a solid limit (he had 15 lb by 7:30 am) so that he could spend the rest of the day hunting big Largies. The strategy paid off as he brought just over 20 lb to the scales on day two giving him a total of 38.28 lb, enough to win the tourney and to take the top spot on the all-time two-day weight record list. Congratulations to Matt Allen for another incredible victory.
Jim D'Ambra, always a strong competitor at Champlain, Carolina-Rigged his way to 33.00 lb by fishing humps and flats. His total wasn't quite enough to beat Allen, but it was nonetheless a very solid bag that landed him in second place. Tim Farrell, another top stick at Champlain, secured third place with 32.51 lb of Smallies. Chris Finnie, the dark horse of the tournament on his first trip to Champlain, sacked 30.35 lb from the back of the boat to land in fourth place. Rounding out the top five was Mike Elson with 29.58 lb including the tourney lunker, a 6.17 lb hawg Largemouth.
Congratulations again to Matt Allen for his record-setting performance and to all the SSBM club members who did battle on the big lake.
