April tournaments at John's Pond can go either way...a great day of fishing or a total grind. This year's season opener was definitely the latter. Of the ten anglers who battled it out, only seven brought fish to the scales, and no one had a limit. But, as usual, Jim D'Ambra found a way to catch them and his three fish for 6.41 lbs turned out to be more than enough to take home the victory.

D'Ambra focused on pre-spawn Largemouth and Smallmouth staging just outside of typical spawning areas. After an early bite on a jerkbait turned out to be a 3.02 lb Smallie, Jim committed to throwing the hard bait for an hour but couldn't generate another strike. Turning to his signature Carolina Rig, D'Ambra managed another two fish and that was all she wrote. Three fish for 6.41 lb and the 1st Place trophy was his!

Bill Barrett did his best to overtake D'Ambra but came up just shy with 4.34 lbs on two fish, including the tourney lunker, a 3.48 lb Largemouth. Barrett tricked his first fish deep with a drop shot and then switched to power techniques for his big fish, flipping a jig into shallow wood. Although he wasn't quite able to catch D'Ambra, Bill earned a solid 2nd Place finish and the tourney lunker prize! Congrats to Jim and Bill for great performances, and to all the SSBM club members who ground it out at John's 2026!
