Drop shot and Texas rigs in weeds 6'-10'

When someone says "Good Luck" to a tournament angler, the usual reply is "Luck...is not a factor!"  But, on some days it is and this was one of those days for Mike Elson.  After a quick flurry of decent dock fish to start the day, Elson felt good to get the skunk out early.  But the dock bite died as quickly as it started, so Mike switched to a drop shot and moved out to the 6'-10' depth range in search of post-spawners in the grass.  It turned out to be the right move as his first cast resulted in his big fish of the day, a 4.88 lb stud!  Shortly after that, a 3.5 lb largie bit and Elson knew what he was doing for the rest of the day.  Bouncing around the pond fishing deeper weeds, the luck kicked in and Elson just kept running into 4 lb fish.  He didn't get many bites but he got the right ones, and when he landed a 4 lb tank off a rock pile at the end of the day to make a final 2 lb cull, he knew he would be tough to beat!  In the end, after a great day of fishing, his 19.15 lb bag was more than enough to take the win!

Not to be outdone, Justin Canada put together a solid limit to lock up second place.  Scoping fish in 4'-12' of water, Canada noticed that the bass were hugging any kind of cover available.  He looked for rock, stumps, and weeds to locate his fish and landed a very respectable 16.58 lb of Ashumet largemouth with 3.43 lb kicker.  Canada caught numbers and he was culling 3lb class fish all day, but he didn't get the one or two giant bites that would have propelled him past Elson.  Still, it was a great day of fishing and a very stout bag!  Congratulations to Mike Elson, Justin Canada, and to all of the SSBM club members who did battle on Ashumet Pond 2026!
