Bed fishing and jerkbaits in spawning areas
Bill Barrett proved, once again, that he is still a force to be reckoned with in SSBM club tournaments. Working from a library of waypoints developed over the last few decades, Barrett located bigger smallmouth on deep beds that were very hard to spot. Despite difficult sight fishing conditions, Bill was able to use his extensive knowledge of the pond to patiently work for bigger bites, and it paid off. A jerkbait bite added some smaller fish, but the majority of his final bag were bedding smallies. And when it was all done, his 14.54 lbs was more than enough to take home the first place trophy!
Charging hard in 2nd Place was club hammer Justin Canada. Working visible beds, Canada would approach, see a fish swim off, pole down, and scope the bed until mama returned. Then it was time for a drop shot or ned rig to do its job. And that strategy worked, to the tune of 13.11 lbs including a 3.61 lb largemouth that took the lunker award for the day. Unfortunately, Canada lost a nearly 6 lb largemouth at the boat that might have had him standing in the winner's circle, but it was not to be. Regardless, Justin had a great day on the water and a solid 2nd Place finish!
Congrats to Bill Barrett and Justin Canada for great performances, and a pat on the back to all of the SSBM club members who braved Long Pond on a blustery May day!
