Smallies in 15ft of water on weed edges

After some strong practice days, Bill Barrett was confident heading into the SSBM Club 2-Day on Champlain North. Bill had found a pattern that he was able to work in a number of areas throughout the lake and it easily held out for the two days of the tournament. Barrett noticed that there were big, active Smallmouth hanging around weed edges in about 15ft of water so he went on the hunt for those types of areas. His search paid off with a Day 1 weight of 16.03 lbs, putting him in a perfect position for Day 2. Despite having success on Day 1 with his main pattern, Bill decided to run to Missisquoi Bay early on Day 2 to look for some monster Largemouth. After boating a solid 3+ lb Largie, he proceeded to loose $30 worth of vibrating jigs to a series of Pike and quickly bailed on his Missisquoi run. The decision to head back to the main lake paid off, as he loaded the boat with solid Smallies and culled up to 15.15 lbs which was just enough to lock up the win with a two day total of 31.18 lb. Congratulations to Bill Barrett for another great victory!

Finishing just behind Barrett was Rob Bell with a total weight of 30.58 lb. Bell's bag consisted of both Largemouth and Smallmouth and was the product of variety of fishing styles. Most of his Largemouth came off of hard structure, bridge pilings, and rip rap that he meticulously picked apart for up to 6 hours at a time. But he also added some solid brown fish to the mix by drop shotting in 30 ft of water! Bell credits new club member Mike Drake with encouraging him to give the drop shot a try out deep, a technique that he had little experience with before Drake gave him some quick how-to lessons on tourney day. Congratulations to Rob Bell for a great performance and to all of the SSBM Club anglers who did battle with mighty Lake Champlain.
