Soft plastics in deep weeds
After 11 months of planning and preparation, Mike Elson’s strategy for the club 1-Day tournament was to head north to cleaner, less pressured water. After a quick stop at a spot closer to the ramp, Elson would be northbound and down for the rest of the tournament. But as often happens in bass fishing, that plan was totally blown up when Elson‘s first spot kicked out over 16 lbs of Ticonderoga largemouth in less than an hour. Fishing Texas rigged soft plastics through offshore weed, Elson landed 8 fish in 45 minutes, with the best five going for 16 lbs. With no need to make the long run north, Elson stayed south and went dirt shallow for the rest of the day to cull up to his final weight of 18.48 lbs. And that was just enough for Elson to hold off a hard-charging Justin Canada and take home the first place trophy.
Justin Canada didn’t make it easy for Elson as he worked a similar pattern of offshore weeds to the tune of 16.29 lbs. Canada caught fish off multiple spots, but his best largies all came from deeper weeds well offshore. He noticed other anglers in his areas fishing tight to the bank and not having the same success so he dedicated his day to thoroughly fishing any deeper weed beds that he could find. His strategy paid off with a solid bag and a very respectable second place finish.
The 1-Day lunker went to Brian Ware with a 5.42 lb swamp donkey that anchored his 13.42 lb bag, which was good for third place. Congratulations to all the top finishers and to all of the club members who showed up to do battle on Lake Champlain, Ticonderoga 2024!
