Chatterbaits in offshore weeds and jigs on hard cover

The pros are always warning anglers not to rely too much on "history" and just fish the moment.  Well, Kevin White decided to give both strategies a shot by focusing his efforts on an area he had discovered during his last trip to Champlain but approaching it based on the current conditions.  Fishing a large grass flat with a distinct weed edge and some hard cover mixed in, White knew it was a good area, but he didn't know just how good it could be!  Throwing a chatterbait along the weed edge, White loaded the boat with a solid limit.  Then, picking apart more isolated hard cover with jigs and soft plastics, he added his kicker Largie, a 6.30 lb Champlain tub, that pushed his final bag to just over 20 lbs.  Even with a dead fish penalty at weigh-in, White still finished with a 19.99 lb bag that was just enough to secure the first place trophy.
 
Not to be outdone, Bob Wheeler had his best performance of the season landing a whopping 19.76 lb bag.  His catch included a solid 4.43 lb Smallie kicker, which temporarily took over as the Smallie Lunker for the season.  On most days, Wheeler's bag would have easily won a club tournament on Champlain, but with Kevin White's dramatic 20lb bag, Wheeler fell just short of the first place trophy and locked up a strong second place finish.  Congratulations to Kevin White and Bob Wheeler for conquering the big lake, and to all the SSBM competitors who did battle at Champlain 2025!
