Swimbaits & finesse baits for shallow Smallies
It takes years of tournament experience to stay mentally sharp when the fish aren't cooperating. When the day is a long grind, it takes a special angler to stick with it and pull together a decent limit. And despite extremely tough conditions at Mashpee Wakeby, Bill Barrett did exactly that, landing 11.50 lb of Smallmouth to notch his first club victory. The bite was slow for Barrett, as it was for everyone else, but he did find a few fish shallow and decided to ride that pattern out, for better or worse. Using his signature Daddy Mac Lures 3" Viper Swimbait in Perch color (daddymaclures.com), Bill stayed shallow until he found the right stretch of shoreline just after 2:00 pm and loaded the boat with four solid keepers. He mixed in some soft-plastic finesse baits to round out his limit, and it was enough to take home the trophy. Congratulations to Bill Barrett for a well-deserved win!
Landing in second place was Chris "The Sniper" Finnie, who has now become the most disliked person in the club by consistently out fishing his boaters. Finnie went full-finesse in any visible grass clumps and bagged three fish for 9.78 lb, including the tourney lunker, a 4.24 lb brute Largemouth. Congrats to Chris for once again demoralizing his boater and for locking up the top spot on the "How do we get this guy DQ'd" list.
Jim D'Ambra Carolina-Rigged his way into third place with a limit of fish weighing 9.27 lb while Mike Ware likewise Carolina-Rigged his way to a 7.11 lb limit and fourth place. Rounding out the top five was Matt Allen with three fish for 5.93 lb. Congratulations again to Bill Barrett for a great victory, and to all the SSBM club members who were able to survive the grind at Mashpee Wakeby!
