Bed fishing for smallies.

Bill Barrett has been a force in Massachusetts bass fishing for years, and he proved once again that he still has what it takes to best the field.  Preparation was key to Barrett's victory, as he pre-fished earlier in the week to locate bedding smallmouth so that he could fish those areas efficiently in the tournament even if conditions were not optimal for sight fishing.  According to Bill, it was his newly installed "Ghost True Arrow" by Bass Fishing Electronics  that gave him the ability to locate and fish deeper beds accurately with his forward facing sonar.  The BFE Ghost True Arrow eliminates arrow lag on Ghost Trolling Motors and keeps the arrow precisely lined up with the motor direction, allowing for pinpoint casts.  And that's exactly what Barrett did.  Once a bed was marked, he went to work with a combination of drop shots, ned rigs, and small jigs to coax those big smallies into biting.  He worked the beds all day and was able to cull up to his final weight of 16.78lb which was more than enough to secure the victory.  Congratulations to Bill Barrett for another great win!

Mike Elson also fished for spawners, landing a 4.25lb largemouth on an unusually deep bed to start the day and then picking off smallies once the sun came out.  Elson's fourth fish was the tourney lunker, a 4.28lb smallie that came off a shallow bed on a rocky point.  Every fish Elson weighed was caught on a drop shot.

Joe Trottier earned the best finish of his club career with 9.01lb for a solid third place finish.  Unlike Barrett and Elson, Trottier bailed on sight fishing and caught most of his fish by bumping a lipless crankbait along rock and gravel bottoms.  He also added one fish on a top water, just to keep things interesting!  Congratulations to the top finishers and to all of the club members who turned out to do battle on Mashpee Wakeby!
