Winning Pattern
Sight fishing and scoping for Smallies

Bill Barrett spent only one hour pre-fishing for this year's Mashpee Spawn Spectacular but that was all he needed to know what he was going to do and where to do it.  Despite easily finding numbers of smallie beds during his pre-fish, Barrett noted that most of them were empty.  An early spawn had pulled many of the big females back out to deeper water earlier than usual.  Come tourney morning, Barrett did catch a couple of solid spawners from deep bedding areas that he had way-pointed in years past.  But, after that, he turned to his forward facing sonar to locate post-spawn females just outside of the main bedding areas.  Fan casting in those areas paid off with enough solid keepers to round out a very stout bag.  Before 2:00pm, Barrett had his final bag in hand so he relaxed for the last hour and hoped that no one else had crushed them like he did.  And, it turned out he was right!  His 17.09 lbs was more than enough to seal the deal and go back-to-back with wins at Mashpee Wakeby in both 2024 and 2025.  Congrats to Bill Barrett for another great victory!

Mike Elson also had high hopes going into the tournament based on his second-place finish last year.  However, when his trolling motor died at 9:00am, he thought his day was done.  But rather than give up, Elson used his best asset, his 6' 7" height, to locate beds by standing behind his console and idling around likely spawning areas.  Creative use of his Power Poles and big motor allowed Elson to scrape up 13.85 lbs of bedding smallies and a bonus 5.16 lb largie that earned the tournament lunker award.  Although it wasn't the day that Elson had planned, it worked out in his favor and proved that Mike Iaconelli was right..."Never Give Up!"  Congratulations to Bill and Mike and to all the SSBM club members who did battle on Mashpee Wakeby, 2025.
